About Dental Prophylaxis
Regular dental prophylaxis is a simple procedure that, when performed twice a year, can make the difference between a healthy smile and one that requires complex dental treatments.
Invest just one hour every 6 months in your oral health!
All individuals have bacterial plaque, and nearly half of the population suffers from gum infections. Saliva, bacteria, and proteins in the mouth form a thin layer that covers the teeth, tongue, gums, and oral mucosa. When we eat, tiny particles such as acids and sugars remain in this layer, creating deposits on the teeth. These deposits, together with bacteria, form dental plaque.
At Sanodent Clinique, dental prophylaxis is performed according to the GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy) protocol, developed by EMS, a global leader in this field.
Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) Protocol

Sanodent Clinique has adopted the Swiss GBT prophylaxis protocol.
Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a systematic and predictable solution for managing dental biofilm during professional prophylaxis, using state-of-the-art technologies such as AIRFLOW®, PERIOFLOW®, and PIEZON®. This protocol is supported by strong scientific evidence.
GBT is based on treatment protocols tailored to each patient, following an individual diagnosis and risk assessment to achieve optimal results. The procedure is minimally invasive and offers a high level of comfort, safety, and efficiency.
Guided Biofilm Therapy also includes patient education and motivation, helping to maintain the health of natural teeth and dental implants for as long as possible.
Why Does GBT “Change the Rules of the Game”?
Dental biofilm (bacterial plaque) is the main etiological factor for cavities, periodontal infections, and peri-implant diseases. Periodontitis can increase the risk of systemic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, arthritis, and diabetes.
Regular oral hygiene, supported by professional care, helps control biofilm—for better oral and overall health.
GBT follows the recommendations of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) regarding Professional Mechanical Plaque Removal (PMPR) and Oral Hygiene Instructions (OHI) for home care.
The 8 Steps of the GBT Protocol:

DIAGNOSIS
We test and analyze each clinical case:
-
Healthy teeth, caries, gingivitis, periodontitis
-
Healthy implants, mucositis, peri-implantitis
We begin with an antibacterial mouth rinse

DISCLOSURE
We make the biofilm visible:
-
We show the disclosed biofilm to the patient
-
The color guides the removal of biofilm
-
Once biofilm is removed, calculus becomes easier to detect

MOTIVATION
We educate and raise awareness:
-
Focus on prevention
-
We instruct patients on proper oral hygiene
-
Sanodent Clinique recommends using a toothbrush, interdental brushes, and dental floss

AIRFLOW®
We remove biofilm, stains, and tartar:
-
AIRFLOW® is used to clean natural teeth, restorations, and implants
-
Removal of supra- and subgingival biofilm up to 4 mm using AIRFLOW® PLUS powder (14 μm)
-
Removal of stains from enamel using AIRFLOW® CLASSIC Comfort powder (40 μm)
-
Biofilm is also removed from gums, tongue, and palate

PERIOFLOW®
We remove biofilm from periodontal pockets (4 mm to 9 mm):
-
AIRFLOW® PLUS powder (14 μm) is used on teeth and implants
-
Interdental biofilm is removed using the PERIOFLOW® nozzle with depth markings

PIEZON® PS
We remove remaining calculus:
-
Use of minimally invasive EMS PS instrument supra- and subgingivally up to 10 mm
-
Pockets deeper than 10 mm are cleaned with mini-curettes
-
EMS PI instrument is used around implants and restorations
-
Recall intervals are established based on risk assessment

CONTROL
We make the patient smile:
-
Final check of remaining biofilm
-
Ensure complete removal of calculus
-
Accurate diagnosis of caries
-
Fluoride protection is applied

RECALL
Healthy patient = Happy patient:
-
Recall frequency is established based on individual risk assessment
In which areas of dentistry do we apply GBT?

General Dentistry
GBT is a modern approach to professional prophylaxis for biofilm management.
-
The foundation of successful prevention of periodontal disease and peri-implantitis
-
Helps maintain oral health and contributes to preventing systemic conditions such as atherosclerosis, respiratory diseases, erectile dysfunction, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases
-
Supports early detection of white spots and caries, being minimally invasive

Orthodontics
GBT is a systematic approach for prevention and maintenance of orthodontic appliances.
-
Prevents abnormal gum growth, gingivitis, and gingival recession
-
Helps detect and prevent white spot lesions and caries
-
Maintains the integrity of orthodontic appliances by reducing plaque accumulation

Implantology
GBT is the only predictable solution for implant maintenance.
-
Treating mucositis with GBT can help prevent peri-implantitis
-
Essential before treatment, post-surgery, and throughout the lifetime of implants

Aesthetic Dentistry
GBT is an effective and minimally invasive procedure for maintaining:
-
Ceramic veneers
-
Crowns
-
Aesthetic restorations
It is recommended before whitening procedures, placement of restorations, or taking dental impressions.
Questions & Answers:
What should I expect after scaling?
Ultrasonic scaling helps prevent periodontal disease and removes stains caused by coffee, tea, or nicotine. It also helps detect hidden caries, contributing to longer-lasting dental health.
Is scaling painful?
Ultrasonic scaling is a minimally invasive and generally painless procedure. However, it may cause slight discomfort, especially in patients with sensitive teeth. In such cases, your dentist may use local anesthesia to reduce sensitivity and increase comfort.
Does scaling whiten teeth and remove stains?
Scaling is not a whitening procedure but a cleaning one. Removing tartar deposits can create a mild whitening effect by eliminating yellow-brown discolorations. The difference is visible, and patients often feel more confident in their smile.
